If nostalgic summers of ice cream cones on the dock overlooking the ocean is what you crave for your family summer vacation, come to Carolina Beach. The picturesque seaside boardwalk has been ranked in the Top Ten Boardwalks in the USA by both  Food and Wine & USA Today.

The boardwalk was built at the turn of the 20th century and was considered to be the jewel of Carolina Beach. Sunbathing was extremely popular at the time, and for those who preferred the shade could go under the pier to lounge away from the sun. A fire devastated the boardwalk in 1940 but was rebuilt for the following summer season.
The boardwalk was booming after that, complete with an amusement park. The ferris wheel was part of the beach landscape as the area soon became a hot spot. A cable car was a fun way to explore the pier then. During the second World War, Carolina Beach and the popular boardwalk was a great place for servicemen on leave to relax.
The 1970s-80s was a lot quieter for the boardwalk. The amusement park was taken moved and the charming wooden boardwalk became concrete. With the popularity of other beaches in North Carolina like Myrtle Beach, Carolina Beach became less popular. However, in the 90s, there was an upturn of tourists flocking back to the area. The charming area is a beautiful array of a colorful seaside town.
Arcades, seafood, sweet spots, boogie boards and seaside treasures can all be found along the boardwalk. You can even fit several people in a surrey bike and feel the ocean breeze as you ride around. Keep with local tradition and pose at the Carolina Beach Crescent Moon. The only sounds you can hear are the hustle and bustle of people and the ocean waves because the area is pedestrian only, keeping the vintage beach feel alive. While summer is when this area is thriving with live music and fireworks, events year-round are held here. The festive Christmas by the Sea can’t be missed!
